Size zero girl ‘too fat for catwalk’

A size zero model has told how she was kicked off a Paris catwalk for being too fat – despite starving herself down to 102lb.

size zero modelsAli Michael, 17, says her hair fell out in clumps and her periods stopped for a year as she became seriously ill trying to compete in the world of fashion.

She turned to a nutritionist to help keep her slim in a healthy way, but this caused her to put on a few much needed pounds.

And even though she was still a US size zero (UK Size 4), she was told her legs were too fat for a Paris fashion show. Now, 5ft 9in Ali is speaking out. She says the industry is making models – as well as young girls who aspire to look like them – ill.

“It has to change,” she said.

Ali was joined on America’s Today show by Amy Astley, editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue, who said she sees an alarming trend for models having to be skinnier. She added: “It comes from the designers.”

Why Face & Body Symmetry Is Sexy

A perfect body may be nice, but superficial traits that you easily see aren’t as important as the cues your brain picks up subconsciously.

In lab tests conducted in universities, men prefer photographs of women with symmetrical facial features, and vice versa. What’s more people who score highly on tests of facial attractiveness also tend to have the most symmetrical bodies.

Researchers believe that this is because symmetry advertises biological quality – good genes, a strong immune system, a nourishing diet. Not to mention reproductive vigour. According to the latest findings, women partnered to men with pleasingly symmetrical bodies have the most orgasms, and women with symmetrical breasts are more fertile than those less symmetrically endowed.

Yoga can cure AIDS

Irked by a Union government notice, which asked Baba Ramdev not to make tall claims about yoga’s curative powers, the yoga guru is now determined to prove his point by finding a cure for AIDS.

Power of Yoga

Ramdev said,”We will prove through clinical tests that yoga can cure AIDS. And we will offer the cure shortly, in the next couple of years.”

Ramdev’s claim comes after a notice was issued to him by the Union government recently. He said he had received the notice from the Centre asking him not to claim his yoga can cure diseases. “I haven’t claimed anything. My followers, who have practised yoga, said they have benefited and their ailments have been cured. People have immensely benefited in controlling ailments like high blood pressure through yoga and meditation. How can anyone contradict this?”

Ramdev went on to suggest that yoga was the way and not sex education to AIDS awareness, prevention and cure. “Sex education in schools need to be replaced by yoga education,” Ramdev told reporters at the state health minister’s residence on Monday.

“The government should stop polluting the minds of innocent young children with sex education. Society’s morality cannot improve with teaching sex education in schools. And AIDS cannot be prevented by talking free sex and by using condoms.”

Normal-Weight People Can Still Be ‘Obese’

Even if your body mass index says you’re of normal weight, you may still be carrying too much fat, according to new research.

A Mayo Clinic report says that more than half of people in the normal weight category have high body fat. That’s more than 20 percent for men and 30 percent for women. They also show heart and other problems normally associated with obesity.Researchers described people with a good BMI and high body fat as having “normal weight obesity.” They said the condition can lead to diseases such as type 2 diabetes.

A news release also said that Mayo studies in 2006 and 2007 suggested that looking at body fat might be a better predictor of heart disease because BMI can’t show the difference between body fat and lean muscle.”Combined, the data from our earlier work and the current study suggest it’s time for a new measure of body fat as a risk factor of heart disease,” says Dr. Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, a cardiologist.

Cheerleader, star student dies in breast implant surgery

Plastic surgery is becoming a popular high school graduation gift in the Valley, but the death of a Florida teenager serves as a reminder to prospective patients and their parents that cosmetic procedures can be fatal.

Stephanie Kuleba, left, died from complications of surgery to breasts.

The Florida teenager received breast augmentation as a graduation gift but died while undergoing the surgery.

Initial reports indicate that the girl didn’t die from the cosmetic surgery, but from complications surrounding her anesthesia.

It is believed that the teen died from malignant hyperthermia, meaning that her heart rate increased along with her body temperature and blood pressure during the surgery.

Doctors say adverse reaction to anesthesia is a hereditary condition that can be detected through regular check-ups.

According to one doctor we spoke to, any age level can be affected.

The death raises questions about elective surgery and teenagers.

One cosmetic surgeon we spoke to says that he is seeing more and more teens coming in for anything from a breast augmentation to a rhinoplasty, or nose job.

He tells us that before he operates on anyone, there are certain things he requires from them.

First he’d like to make sure the patient’s body has matured completely because teens who are younger than 18 might still have more developing to do, so it would be in their best interest to wait.

He also wants to make sure the teen isn’t succumbing to peer pressure and has talked it over with their parents.

Then doctors recommend researching the procedure thoroughly to make sure that all risks involved are known and understood.

Doctors say if teens follow all of these rules and go to a reputable surgeon they are more likely to safely achieve the image they’d like to have.
